Guaca is our entry for GBJAM 14 (theme: Old Gold).

You are a stranger arriving at a small village where people still whisper about guacas: treasures buried long ago, guarded by something that doesn't want them found. Talk to the villagers, learn what offerings the ritual needs, go into the forest at night to gather them, and perform the ritual before the ghouls drive you mad. How to play

  • Talk to Laura in the village to get her request.
  • Enter the forest and find the three offerings. Press START to check what you still need.
  • Find the shining spot and dig. The ritual begins.
  • Place each offering on a stump and dance until it's accepted. Ghouls will try to stop you.
  • Bring the guaca back to Laura.

Getting hit costs sanity. Lose all of it and you collapse, and the night is over.

About cut content

This is a smaller game than the one we planned. Between the time limit, technical problems and losing one of our programmers along the way, we had to cut a lot. Some of what didn't make it:

  • Three more villagers: Josué, Pedro and Karla. Their stories and dialogue are written, each with their own guaca and ritual.
  • A multi-night campaign: several guacas to recover over a limited number of nights.
  • Two more offerings: salt and candles. They're drawn, but not in the game.
  • The duende: a second enemy, the mischievous goblin from latinomaerican folklore. He's fully animated and was replaced by the ghoul.
  • The palette changing with the hour of the night.
  • A notebook with a mini-map to track clues.

We'd love to finish it after the jam.

Honestly loved the game! The art is pretty much amazing and I love the concept, too. Great work guys!!

Mostly liked it, but finding the offerings was a bit too notorios. Maybe cuz I'm just not a fan of "go around and find objects" games

Thanks for playing and for the honest feedback! You're right, finding the offerings is tedious. Unfortunately we didn't get to build the forest section the way we really wanted to, so the searching ended up feeling more drawn out than we'd planned. We appreciate you giving it a shot c:

THE ART IS SO CUTE, I LOVE THE LITTLE GUY!!! Very interesting setting!

Thank you so much for the enthusiasm!! Our artists really appreciate the kind words, they put so much love into the little guy and the whole look of the game. Glad you enjoyed the setting too :)
